Amanda, I'm excited to find your substack ... your work really resonates. In addition, because there are no coincidences, I was looking for my own Note celebrating the first violet of spring and the search pulled up your violet too. I'm so pleased it's violet season ... this will be my first year of foraging and i cannot wait to get brave and snack on a blossom. We avoid mowing as long as possible, compost with enthusiasm, and grow happy vegetables. Take care!
Hello! Thank you so much for reading and sharing. 💕
I love those first signs of spring so much! I have not tried eating any violets, but I may need to try. Please let me know how your experiment goes. 😊
I looked up a bit of information about violets last year because a neighbor commented on how many were in our yard despite the fact we have a company we use for organic lawn care. She’s definitely into a much more heavy handed approach!
This year I’ve encouraged my husband to drop the service in our backyard, where I feed the birds. I’d like eventually not to use any treatment at all, but I haven’t been able to get him fully on board as of yet. I’m working on it though! 💕
Love the no mow months everywhere around the world. The awareness for beneficial insects is growing among people. For us, slow mow is the winter when it’s dry season. It allows for all the tiny purple wildflowers to grow and the bees love them. Our neighbor installed an apiary a few months ago and we get lots of bee friends in the yard now. ❤️ Sadly, wet season is around the corner which means we have to start mowing twice a month otherwise the yard turns into an impenetrable jungle with lots of invasive species. (Florida has a problem with invasive plants and trees.)
I think twice a month is appropriate, especially when in the rainy season. I love that your neighbor installed an apiary. How fun that you get the benefit, too! 😌
Yellow, purple and green is my favourite Spring colour combo too. I love: "doing something is better than doing nothing". Definitely an approach I've tried to adopt - rather than beating myself up for all the things I can't/don't do - What can I do? What do I do? And celebrate that. Thanks Amanda, enjoy your low mow Spring :0) Your dog is absolutely adorable too!
Thank you so much for reading. I am glad to hear that “doing something is better than doing nothing” resonated with you.
I feel like it’s so easy to get caught up in the narrative that if we can’t do something perfectly, or if we’re just “one person,” we shouldn’t bother at all.
I admittedly felt a little weird writing this piece despite having a lot I wanted to say. There is so much more I could be doing, and I know there are others who are doing a lot more that probably make more sense to be the ones sharing this info. And I was a little afraid people might think, “Why is this girl writing about this?” lol
But I think this is the trap, and I just decided to go for it! Your words still make me feel a lot better about the decision. 😊
I am glad you love my little guy. I actually have some nighttime videos of him trying to catch lightning bugs that I’ll have to share here soon. He’s just too cute for his own darn good. 😌
I am glad you did go for it! I can't remember the exact phrase, but something along the lines of: the world needs many people doing things imperfectly, not a few doing things perfectly. Look forward to your nighttime pooch videos :0) We have a dog like that - just way too cute x

Thank you. I feel like I’ve heard a quote like that as well. Perhaps you can share your pup here soon as well! 😊
